Social Work Program

Program Description

The program emphasizes practical knowledge and seeks to provide students with the specific skills required by an effective helping person. It is oriented toward self-growth and is designed to enhance the student’s capacity for human relationships. Students are challenged to examine personal values and attitudes as well as those underlying the philosophy of social work.

In keeping with the applied nature of the program, practice experiences are related to the classroom learning. Throughout this process, the focus is on professional development and the constructive use of self in a helping relationship.

The goal of the program is to prepare students for immediate work in the social services field. Consideration is also given to content which is compatible to preparing students who wish to continue their education.

This program has transfer arrangements with several BSW programs. Graduates of the Social Work Program are eligible to apply to become Registered Social Workers in the Province of Alberta.

Career Potential

Graduates work with individuals, families and groups in a variety of social services settings, from the provincial Department of Family and Social Services to residential treatment centres, children’s’ services, hospital social services departments, auxiliary hospitals, services to aboriginal peoples, mental health and community based agencies, employment counselling, court and probation services, drug and alcohol centres, and many other agencies. Working titles could include social worker, immigration worker, crisis support counsellor, employment counsellor, community social services worker, mental health worker, group facilitator, etc. Practical skills obtained through the field placements provide a solid foundation of work experience.

Field Placement

A crucial part of the program is the learning experience gained from a practicum which allows the student to work under supervision in a social services agency for two days per week during each of the four terms. This is an opportunity for the student to apply, demonstrate and evaluate his/her knowledge and skills in helping others.
